Netflix Keeps Buffering? Fixes That Actually Help

When a stream keeps stalling, most households jump straight to “I need a faster plan.” Sometimes that is true. Often the fix is a speed check, a clean reboot path, a quality setting tweak, or clearing what the app has cached on the device. Streaming brands publish rough bitrate targets (they change over time). As a working rule of thumb: 720p often needs about 3–5 Mbps, 1080p about 5–10 Mbps, and 4K about 15+ Mbps — plus headroom for other phones, games, and uploads on the same connection.
Start with a real speed test
Open a reputable speed test on a laptop or phone. Prefer a device on Ethernet or sitting next to the modem/router so you are measuring the pipe, not a weak bedroom Wi‑Fi hop. Write down download, upload, and latency. Retest once in the evening when the neighborhood is busy.
If the test is far below your plan’s advertised range even next to the gateway, call the ISP or compare plans at your ZIP on RSINC. If the test looks healthy but the TV still buffers, keep going — the bottleneck may be Wi‑Fi to that room, the streaming app, or too many simultaneous 4K sessions.
Reboot the path: modem, then router
- Unplug power from the modem (or gateway) and the separate router if you have one.

- Plug the modem in first; wait until its online/ready lights look normal.
- Power the router next; reconnect the streaming device to Wi‑Fi (or Ethernet) and retry.

App and device cleanup

One quiet 1080p stream can look fine on a modest plan. Add a second 4K TV, a cloud backup upload, and a video call, and the same plan starts spinning. Inventory what is online, pause big downloads, and move heavy devices closer to the router or onto Ethernet when possible.

How fast do I need for one 4K stream?
Plan for roughly 15 Mbps or more dedicated to that stream, plus margin for Wi‑Fi inefficiency and other devices. Exact app requirements change — check the player’s help pages for current figures.
Why does only one TV buffer?
That room’s Wi‑Fi hop, an aging streaming stick, or a stuck app cache is more likely than the whole ISP path. Test speed next to the TV, reboot the stick, and try a lower quality setting.
Should I buy a new router first?
