This guide walks a first-time install from obstruction scan to renamed Wi‑Fi — with notes on where kit variants differ.
What should be in the box
Exact SKUs change, but a typical Standard 4 residential kit includes:
- Flat Starlink dish with integrated kickstand
- Starlink cable (~15 m / 49 ft is common)

- Router (Router Mini + stand on many Standard 4 kits; other kits ship Router 3 or Router 4)

Step 1 — Download the app and scan for obstructions
Install the Starlink app on iOS or Android and sign into the same account that owns the order. Use the obstruction tool outdoors: slowly sweep the phone so the app can paint the sky dome. Trees, rooflines, and chimneys that block the view will create intermittent drops once satellites move. Pick the clearest practical spot — ground mount, eave, or ridge — before you commit screws.
Standard 4 flat dishes are manually positioned. They do not motor around like early circular “Actuated” units. Good placement up front matters more than ever.
Step 2 — Mount the dish and seat the Starlink cable
Lift the kickstand (or install the pipe/adapter you purchased). Plug the long Starlink cable into the dish with the locking feature oriented as the install card shows — insert until the face sits flush. Route the other end indoors to the power supply. There is typically no tiny release tab; removal is a firm outward pull once you are sure you want it out.
Keep drip loops below the outdoor connector so rainwater does not follow the cable into the port.
Step 3 — Wire the power supply and router
Standard 4 + Router Mini pattern (common):
- Dish cable → either port on the power supply.
- Click Router Mini into its stand.
- Short Ethernet cable → remaining supply port to Router Mini Ethernet 1 or 2 (use the weather-sealed end on the supply side when provided).
- AC cable → supply → wall outlet.
Standard 4 X / Router 3 pattern: the dish cable often lands in router port #1 marked with the Starlink symbol; the router/power brick arrangement follows that kit’s card — do not force a Mini diagram onto a Router 3 box.
Dual PoE + Router 4 pattern: the supply feeds PoE to the router over Ethernet. Confirm labels on your Dual PoE brick before guessing.
Step 4 — Power on and wait for first light
Give the system several minutes. The dish will search, download configuration, and may ask for a physical rotation. Open the Starlink app on phone Wi‑Fi or cellular as directed. If an alignment alert appears, follow the on-screen compass/rotation tool until the app clears the warning (some guides note no alert when you are already within about five degrees).
Step 5 — Join Wi‑Fi and set your network name
- On a phone, join the temporary STARLINK SSID.
- A captive page or app prompt should offer a new network name and password — change both.
- Reconnect every device to the new SSID.
- In the app, review obstruction stats, reboot controls, and any mesh options if you own extra nodes.
Optional: use the spare Ethernet ports
Once online, extra RJ45 ports on the supply or router can feed a smart TV, desktop, or access point. Prefer wired for the heaviest streamer in the house. If you already own a premium mesh system, advanced users can enable bypass/passthrough on the Starlink router and let the third-party gear handle Wi‑Fi — only after the kit is confirmed working stock.
First-week troubleshooting
- Offline after a move — rescan obstructions; even a slight patio shift can clip the sky.
- Slow only on Wi‑Fi — test Ethernet; upgrade placement or add a Starlink mesh node / Router 4 if rooms are dead.
- No boot lights — verify outlet, GFCI, and that both PoE/Ethernet jumpers are fully seated.
