What Is 5G Home Internet Deprioritization? (T-Mobile & Verizon Fair Use)

Deprioritization is the reason a 5G home gateway can show full bars at 8:12 p.m. and still deliver a third of the morning speed. It is not a secret throttle that turns your plan into 3 Mbps forever, and it is not a hard data cap with an overage fee. It is a place-in-line rule on a shared cell sector: when the tower is busy, some traffic waits.

T-Mobile and Verizon both sell “unlimited” 5G home internet. Both also publish network-management language that lets them put home-internet data — and especially heavy home-internet data — behind other customers during congestion. Understanding the two layers (always-on home vs. mobile priority, plus a usage tripwire) is how you stop replacing a gateway that is working as designed.

Deprioritization in one paragraph

A 5G home plan shares the same radios as smartphones. The carrier assigns a priority class to each plan brand. When the sector has spare capacity, everyone flies. When it does not, the scheduler serves higher-priority users first. Your session stays connected; throughput and latency get worse. Off-peak, or on a lightly loaded rural site, you may never feel it. That is why the same plan is “fine” at 10 a.m. Saturday and “broken” on a Tuesday night.

Two different triggers

1. Baseline home-versus-phone priority

Even in month one, with modest usage, T-Mobile’s published practices put Home Internet in the same general neighborhood as mobile “Heavy Data Users,” and behind most postpaid T-Mobile-branded smartphone plans when the network is congested. Verizon’s 5G Home product likewise competes with Verizon mobile traffic on the same sites; customer materials and field reports describe smartphone traffic keeping a better seat when a sector fills up. This layer has nothing to do with a terabyte threshold. It is why “slow at night” shows up for people who barely stream.

2. A heavy-usage tripwire inside the billing cycle

T-Mobile: Once a Home Internet (or current T-Mobile Internet) line exceeds 1.2 TB of on-network data in the current billing cycle, T-Mobile classifies it as an Internet Heavy Data User and says that traffic is prioritized last on the network for the rest of that cycle. The company has applied versions of this rule to new customers since January 2024 and more broadly since May 2024. Crossing 1.2 TB does not stop the connection and does not add a per-gigabyte charge. It only changes your class during congestion until the cycle resets.

Verizon: There is no single public “1.2 TB” number. Verizon’s 5G Home and LTE Home heavy-usage FAQ says that if a line’s use in a bill cycle is more than the average amount used by the top 5% of users on the network during the preceding six months, then during congestion Verizon may reduce speeds or prioritize that data behind other traffic for the rest of the cycle. The benchmark floats as the network’s heavy users change. Verizon says it notifies you by text, email, and My Verizon before you reach the limit, and that if the network is not congested you may notice little or no change.

What “unlimited” still means

You can keep using data after the tripwire. 4K, console downloads, and camera uploads do not get a shutoff valve. The risk is evening usability: a household that already sits behind phones, then also sits behind every other non-heavy user, is first to lose 4K stability when the sector fills. The next billing date restores the previous class automatically. There is no “penalty month.”

AT&T Internet Air also markets unlimited data and reserves congestion management. It has been less explicit about a public terabyte line item than T-Mobile. Treat it as the same family of rules: shared radio, fair use, no metered overage.

How to tell deprioritization from a bad install

  • Morning fast, evening slow, same Ethernet test — classic congestion / priority, not a dying gateway.
  • Slow all day on Ethernet next to a window — signal, obstruction, or a weak sector. Move the gateway, try another room, or ask the carrier to re-check the address.
  • Only Wi-Fi is slow — in-home band congestion. Test a laptop on Ethernet or the gateway’s 5 GHz / 6 GHz SSID.
  • You crossed 1.2 TB (T-Mobile) or got a Verizon high-usage notice and nights got worse mid-cycle — the tripwire is in play on top of ordinary peak load.

Run the same speed test, on the same device, wired if you can, at 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. for three weekdays. A 40–70% evening drop with a healthy signal is the deprioritization signature. A 10% drop is just life on a shared medium.

What you can actually do

You cannot buy your way to smartphone-class priority on a standard home plan. You can reduce how often the sector’s queue matters:

  1. Schedule console and NAS backups after midnight.
  2. Cap extra 4K streams you are not watching.
  3. Place the gateway for the best 5G lock (window, correct orientation, away from metal and fish tanks).
  4. Use Ethernet for the one device that must not buffer.
  5. If you regularly crush 1.2 TB, assume T-Mobile nights will get worse in the last third of the month — that is the policy working.
  6. If evenings are consistently unusable even in week one, the sector is overcrowded. That is an availability problem, not a settings problem. Shop fiber, cable, or the other 5G carrier at the same address.

Fair use versus a data cap

A cable data cap (where they still exist) bills you or hard-throttles to a crawl after a set allotment, busy or not. Fair-use deprioritization is conditional: no congestion, little effect. That is why two neighbors on T-Mobile can argue on a forum — one never hits a busy hour, the other lives under a stadium sector. Both are describing the same policy.

Net-neutrality debates treat priority classes as a quality hierarchy. Carriers describe them as necessary scheduler tools on finite spectrum. For a household decision, skip the philosophy and look at your three-day morning/evening log. If the log is ugly, the next useful action is a competing technology, not a firmware rabbit hole.
