What Is an ONT? The Fiber Box That Replaces Your Modem

That wall box is the handoff between the provider's glass and your home network.

If a fiber tech just left a small powered box on your wall, garage, or closet, you met an ONT — an optical network terminal. It fills the role a cable modem serves on a coax connection by terminating the provider’s optical link and handing data to your home network. With a fiber connection, you do not add a separate coax modem on top.

What the ONT actually does

Fiber carries data as pulses of light through thin glass. Phones, laptops, and most routers expect electrical Ethernet (or Wi-Fi derived from it). The ONT sits where the fiber drop ends and performs that conversion. Providers may call it a service box, fiber jack, or network terminal — same role.

A tech mounts it, lands the fiber, and activates ("lights") the port from the network side. From the ONT, one Ethernet run typically feeds your router or a provider gateway. The box needs wall power; without power, internet stops. Some providers offer battery equipment that supports voice service only. Keeping internet access online during a power outage generally requires backup power for both the ONT and the router, while the provider’s outside network must also remain operational.

ONT vs. modem: same job, different wire

Both sit at the ISP boundary. The practical difference for shoppers: you usually cannot buy a generic ONT and swap it like a retail cable modem. ONTs are provider-provisioned and tied to that fiber line.

You still need a router (or a gateway)

An ONT alone does not create Wi-Fi or manage a house full of devices. Connect a router's WAN port to the ONT's Ethernet/data jack. Many ISPs ship a single gateway that combines routing and Wi-Fi; on some newer models the ONT optics are built into that gateway so there is no separate wall box. Older installs often keep a standalone ONT plus a separate router/gateway.

Want your own mesh? Often yes — plug it into the ONT (or put the ISP gateway in bridge/passthrough if the provider requires their box to stay in line). Confirm the provider's rules before you buy gear.

Reading the lights

Labels vary, but the logic is similar across brands:

If PON is healthy but Wi-Fi is dead, move downstream to the router. If PON is red, skip the mesh tinkering and open a ticket.

Who owns it, and how installs differ

The provider usually installs and provisions the ONT, but ownership and return rules vary. Do not cut or sharply bend the fiber, relocate the box, or block its vents. A technician may be required for a new fiber drop or replacement, while some homes with an existing ONT may qualify for self-installation. Ask the provider what must remain in the home if you move or cancel.

Hardware layouts differ by company — some use a closet/garage standalone ONT with Ethernet to a router and optional battery for voice; others fold optics into the gateway. When you compare fiber offers, ask whether equipment is bundled, whether you can use your own router, and what happens to the ONT if you move or cancel.

Do I need a modem with fiber?

No separate coax modem. The ONT (or an integrated fiber gateway) replaces that role.

Can I buy my own ONT?

Usually not. The fiber provider must authorize the ONT on its network, and many providers supply the required model. Confirm the provider’s equipment policy before buying anything.

Can I use my own router?

Usually yes via the ONT Ethernet port, or via bridge mode on an ISP gateway when required. Follow your provider's instructions.

What if an ONT light is red?

Treat it as a line/ONT issue toward the provider. Blinking during first sync can be normal for a few minutes; red that stays red needs support.

Does the ONT need battery backup?

The ONT needs power. To keep internet working during a local outage, provide compatible backup power for both the ONT and router and remember that service also depends on the provider’s network remaining available.
