Starlink Cancel and Return: Step-by-Step Account Guide
Updated · ~6 min read

Canceling Starlink is mostly self-serve: you end the subscription in the customer portal, decide whether hardware comes back, and follow the prepaid label if a return applies. The stressful part is usually timing — billing cutoffs, the 30-day return window, and rented-kit rules that can charge full retail if the dish never ships back. This walkthrough keeps the steps linear.
Before you click Cancel
- Note your billing date. Starlink generally keeps service active through the period already paid. Cancel before the next invoice generates if you want to avoid another month.
- Know purchase vs rental. Bought kits and rented kits (including some no-cost / promotional Standard rentals rolled out in late 2025) follow different return expectations.
- Gather serials and the original box if you still have them. Any rigid carton works, but factory foam travels better.
- Screenshot plan details in case you need support later about a deposit or activation fee.
Cancel service in the Starlink account (website)
- Sign in at starlink.com/account (desktop is more complete than the app for returns).
- Open Home → Your Subscription (wording can show as Subscriptions).
- Click Manage beside the service line you want to end — roaming and residential lines cancel separately.
- Choose Cancel Service and read the confirmation carefully (end date, any return prompts).
- If you intend to send hardware back and the UI offers “I would like to return my hardware”, check that box while it is available.
- Confirm. Save the on-screen summary.
To undo a cancel that has not taken effect yet, watch for a banner such as “Your service plan will end on …” and use Resume when Starlink still offers it.
Start or download the return label
When a return is eligible, Starlink emails a prepaid label — search for subject lines like “Your Starlink Return” and check spam. On desktop Order Summary you can often re-download via the three-dot menu next to a Return Initiated status. App-only flows sometimes hide re-download; use a browser if the PDF never arrives.
What to pack
Include every major piece the order shipped:
- Dish / antenna
- Router
- Power supply and AC cable
- Starlink data cable and Ethernet jumpers
- Kickstand, pipe adapter, or other mounts that came with the kit (accessories bought separately may have their own return rules)
Do not ship wet gear. Wipe connectors, coil cables without sharp bends, and immobilize the dish so the cable port is not crushed.
Refund windows vs “just cancel”
Within the roughly 30-day return period (commonly measured from payment due / delivery per Starlink’s Terms): returning an undamaged, unmodified kit can unlock refunds on hardware (purchase) or activation-style fees (rental), plus the first month of service in many cases — shipping charges are often excluded. Follow the portal Return Policy text for your country.
After the return window on a purchased kit: canceling service usually means you keep the hardware; no refund is owed on the dish simply because you canceled.
Rented kits: Terms require return in good condition within about 30 days of service cancellation or Starlink may bill the full retail kit price. Treat that deadline like a library due date.
After the carrier scans the box
Refund timing of 10–15 business days after Starlink receives and inspects the kit is commonly cited in help articles. Track the parcel, keep drop-off receipts, and leave the cancel confirmation email in your inbox until the credit posts.
If Cancel or Return is missing
Business, maritime, or special accounts may lack self-serve cancel. Open a support ticket from the account rather than inventing a phone tree. If hardware return is greyed out, the kit may be outside the eligible window — the UI is usually telling the truth.
Compare internet options for your address
Whether you are weighing Starlink, fiber, or cable in your neighborhood, start with a ZIP check and a quick call. Soft next steps only — no hard sell.
Reactivation and capacity notes
Starlink warns that after you cancel, you may not be able to reactivate instantly. Capacity and waitlists vary by cell. If you might return in a few weeks, compare the cost of pausing (when offered) versus a full cancel-and-reorder cycle. Roam and residential lines are separate — canceling one does not automatically cancel the other.
If cancellation stems from obstruction disappointment, try a temporary mount move and a fresh app scan before you give up on the kit. Many returns happen because the dish sat under a tree line that a five-minute scan would have flagged.
Document everything for your records
Keep a simple folder with: cancel confirmation PDF or screenshot, return label PDF, carrier drop-off receipt, and the bank line item once the refund posts. If Starlink later bills a rented-kit retail charge, that packet is how you prove the box left your hands inside the deadline.
FAQ
Is canceling Starlink prorated?
Typically no. Service runs through the paid period; cancel before the next invoice to avoid another cycle.
Can I cancel in the mobile app?
Often yes for the subscription itself, but label re-downloads and some return tools work more reliably on the website.
What if I lose a cable?
Missing pieces can jeopardize a “good condition” rental return or a full purchase refund. Order a replacement only if Starlink support says it is required before shipping the rest back.
Policies paraphrase Starlink Help Center and Terms language current in 2025–2026. Always follow the live text in your account — regional rules differ.
